Saint Maurus, better known in France as Saint Maur, was the founder and abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Glanfeuil, St. Maur-sur-Loire. When St. Maur was only 12 years old, his father Equitius, an Italian nobleman, sent him to live with Saint Benedict at Monte Cassino to be trained in monastic rule. In his early thirties, circa 543, St. Benedict sent St. Maur into Gaul to establish his monastery on the Loire, by favour of King Theodebert.

Scholars and the devout alike will find in this CD-ROM one of the finest early 12th-century Romanesque illuminated manuscripts in the municipal library at Troyes. This captivating historical presentation retraces the major events in Saint Maur's life, from his entry into the monastery of Monte Cassino, until his last posthumous miracle. A treasure trove for historians and lay enthusiasts of the illuminated manuscripts alike; offering unique access, never before available.

This manuscript, conserved at the Media Library of Troyes, dates back to the 12th century and; is a treasure of Romanesque illumination. It was presented to the public in an exhibition entitled "Romanesque France at the Time of the First Capetians, 987-1152". A product of the Abbey of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in Val-de-Marne, manuscript 2273 of the Media Library of Troyes contains several texts about Saint Benoit, Saint Maur and Saint Babolein. The story of the life and miracles of Saint Maur, written by Odon de Glanfeuil in the 9th century, was embellished with lavish decoration by a great artist from the first quarter of the 12th century.

Paintings and historiated initials retrace the great deeds of the saint, from his arrival at the Monastery of Monte Cassino to his last posthumous miracle. The manuscript, which belonged in the 16th century to the great Troyes humanist Pierre Pithou, entered the collections of the Media Library of Troyes during the Revolution.

This CD-ROM presents the entire facsimile of the Latin manuscript in its original written form. The program lets you turn the pages virtually, zoom in on images to see a high level of detail, do research using an index and read a commentary, in English or in French, about each illumination. The commentary was written by Charlotte Denoël, curator at the Department of Manuscripts at the National Library of France, with the assistance of Patricia Stirnemann from the Institute of Research and History of Texts at the National Council for Scientific Research, and Thierry Delcourt from the Media Library of Troyes. The idea behind this collection is to present veritable digital facsimiles of exceptional documents, such as illuminated manuscripts and artists’ notebooks, accompanied by commentary. Owing to their fragility, these documents are seldom exhibited and usually only consulted by researchers. Fully reproduced in high definition, these unique documents can now be appreciated in their smallest details.
