O
n the occasion of the exhibition “Paris 1400: The Arts under Charles VI,” organised by the Louvre Museum, the Condé de Chantilly Museum decided to present to the public for the first time in thirty years the original manuscript of the famous The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry, which came to be well-known thanks to the many reproductions of its illuminations.
T
his CD-Rom, available in English, French and German, is entirely consecrated to the French mediaeval manuscript The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry. Indeed, it has been designed so that the manuscript can be easily consulted. The ten sections of the work form an interactive table of contents, followed by a presentation of vignettes of the different folios of each section. An index completes these navigation tools.
D
uring the presentation of this work in 2004, only twenty or so folios could be admired out of a total of 412. In order to satisfy the public’s curiosity, the
Réunion des Musées Nationaux
created a programme in which digital facsimiles of whole pages can be consulted. This programme lets you turn the pages virtually or leaf though the manuscript automatically. Two levels of navigable zoom enable you to see the tiniest details of the illumination.
I
n 1410 or so, the Duke of Berry commissioned this book of hours, a prayer book for lay people, from three artists of Flemish background, the Limbourg brothers. Left uncompleted when the three brothers died in 1416, the illumination of the manuscript was later finished by Barthélemy d'Eyck and Jean Colombe in the second half of the 15th century.
