Marie-Antoinette (DVD)

A
lthough her name became associated with all the excesses of the French monarchy, Marie-Antoinette's personality and role are much too complex and significant for her to be reduced to the caricature of a shallow, frivolous and depraved monarch. In this film, director David Grubin paints an unexpected portrait of the Queen by presenting key episodes of her life. He shows us the multiple facets of Marie-Antoinette, both a Queen and a woman, a wife and a mother, as well as a political figure by fate and necessity. In spite of her shortcomings and mistakes, she finally came into her own, showing remarkable strength during her inexorable descent into hell.
T
his film is both documentary and drama, blending biography and historical reenactments that feature a Queen embodied by the actress Caroline Bernard.
I
want Marie-Antoinette to inhabit this film like a ghost. And it is not fiction, insofar as we show what really happened in these scenes, except for dialogues.
(David Grubin, quoted in
l'Humanité
, October 2004)
